Matthäus Röseler , also: Matthias Rosler; Rösler; Lucanus (* around 1522 in Luckau ; † April 23, 1569 in Rostock ) was a German poet, mathematician, astronomer, physician and legal scholar.

Life

Matthäus Röseler enrolled at the University of Wittenberg in October 1541 . Here he first completed a basic course in philosophy. In addition, he attended lectures in poetics with Johannes Marcellus , in ethics with Philipp Melanchthon , in Greek with Veit Winsheim , mathematics with Georg Joachim Rheticus , Erasmus Flock , and Erasmus Reinhold , physics with Paul Eber and rhetoric with Johannes Saxonius . At the same time, he also attended the lectures of Martin Luther and Caspar Cruciger at the theological faculty, familiarized himself with the lectures of Augustin Schurff , Georg Kleinschmidt , Jakob Milich , and Melchior Fend at the medical faculty and attended lectures at the law faculty. There were, among others, Jerome Schurff , Laurentius Zoch and Ulrich von murder ferrous been a teacher.

On February 25, 1546 he acquired the academic degree of a Magister in the Seven Liberal Arts and in the following year saw the shutdown of teaching at the Wittenberg University due to the Schmalkaldic War . When the Wittenberg University was restored under the leadership of Melanchthon, was Röseler, who had entered as a poet in appearance and Poeta laurus was, in 1549 received in the Senate of the philosophy department of the university. On August 2, 1550 he moved to the philosophical faculty of the University of Rostock , where he took over a philosophical professorship . In the beginning he had dealt with mathematical subjects.

In Rostock he completed alongside a medical degree, became a doctor of medicine doctorate and joined as a professor at the medical school in 1554. He began studies in law and on November 23, 1557 had earned the degree of licentiate in law. He made an appearance especially in the dispute over Johann Draconites , so that the Rostock council appointed him in 1560 as the city's syndic . He lectured in law school and later earned a doctorate in law . As a syndic in 1562, he suffered a lot of hostility, which in 1565 led to his dismissal.

Therefore, in 1565 he entered the service of Duke Albrecht of Prussia , who appointed him President of the Diocese of Pomesania and Samland . As such, however, he had to be a doctor of theology . The duke advised him to go to Wittenberg and take a doctorate at the local university. However, Paul Eber and Georg Major did not want this because they had concerns. After a few months he had given up this post and returned to Rostock. It has not been established whether he continued to work there as a professor at the university. Röseler also headed the deanery of the faculty of philosophy and the faculty of medicine. He was also vice rector in the summer semester of 1555, in the summer semesters 1554, 1557, 1561 and in the winter semesters 1554, 1557, 1560, 1564 rector of the Rostock alma mater .

Matthäus Röseler was with Katharine, geb. Reuter (or Ritter) married. Children also had children from that marriage. After his death, his brother Georg built an epitaph for him in the Jakobskirche .
