Melchior Fendt
Melchior Fendt, also: Fend, Fendius (* 1486 in Nördlingen ; † November 8, 1564 in Wittenberg ), was a German physicist and doctor .
Life
After attending the school in his hometown and the school in Göttingen, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig in the summer semester of 1506 , where in the summer semester of May 18, 1513 he obtained the degree of a baccalaureus in the arts under Simon Pistoris the Elder . He moved to the University of Wittenberg on July 20, 1513 , was a schoolmaster in Torgau in 1517 , moved to Plauen in the same position in 1519 , acquired a master's degree in Wittenberg on February 14, 1519 , and took over the position in Eisleben from Georg Rhau in 1520 was accepted into the philosophical faculty of the Wittenberg Academy in 1523.
After he took over the deanery of the philosophical faculty in 1525, he concentrated on the studies of medicine. In 1527 he was given the office of doctor for the poor in the city of Wittenberg for a payment of 12 guilders a year. But in the same year he moved to Göttingen, where he became the rector of the city school, but after two years he returned to Wittenberg. After earning a degree in medicine in 1531 , he lectured on physics in 1535.
In 1536 he applied for a professorship in medicine, but still had to wait for it and in his lectures in 1537 and 1538, with “De formatione fetus”, he primarily dealt with medical topics. After he received his doctorate on July 3, 1543 , he took over the long-awaited third full medical professorship at the medical faculty of the university in 1546 . Fendt, who remained the only medical doctor during the Schmalkaldic War and at the time of the Wittenberg surrender , was held in high regard by his patients.
The first student hospital in Wittenberg was founded under his leadership . He donated 400 guilders, the interest of which was made available to those in need.
After his death, an epitaph was created for him in the Wittenberg town church , which shows him as the aged Simeon presenting Christ in the temple (Luke 2.22ff).
In addition to his extensive organizational activities at the university, he held the dean's office of the philosophical and medical faculties several times and was rector of the university in the winter semester of 1532 and 1543 and in the summer semester of 1553 .
