The Matthias-Claudius-Gymnasium is a high school in Gehrden near Hanover . The school is named after the poet Matthias Claudius (1740-1815) and is located on Matthias-Claudius-Straße. The grammar school is located on Gehrdener Berg directly by the forest. In the four to five-class school, around 900 pupils are taught by around 75 teachers.

history

The grammar school was founded in 1946 as a suburban school. The only class at that time was taught in the club room of the Benther restaurant "Sieben Trappen" . In 1949 the first building, today's central building, was built on Waldstrasse (today Matthias-Claudius-Strasse). Three years later the building was expanded and in 1956 it was recognized as a state high school. Meanwhile, the number of students had grown to 210 students, the first Abiturjahrgang went from 1961. In 1959 the school was given its current name. In the years from 1957 to 1968, various structural measures were implemented, such as: B. the construction of four more building wings as well as a sports area with a gym . In 1976 the reformed upper school was introduced. A school library, modern science rooms and a student lounge were set up by the school authorities.

In 1982 the student body rose to the highest level of 1394 students. Only five years later, the number of students was again less than 1,000, and this year the foundation stone was laid for a student exchange with a French school. The branch of music that has existed to this day has existed since 1991. In 1995 the school's first homepage was set up. The computer rooms, which were first put into operation in 1987, have been refurbished. In 2004, as part of the reintegration of the fifth and sixth years, the latest building was built. All parts of the building have been extensively renovated since 2013.

Location and building

Entrance area and auditorium

Due to the location on the eastern slope of the 155 meter high Burgberg , part of the Gehrdener Berg ridge , the buildings extend over various levels and altitudes. The school is located 90–100 m above sea level . Many of the classrooms have a view of the forest and the adjoining schoolyard. There are several outdoor classrooms in and around the forest as well as seating.

There is currently a central building with an auditorium , music rooms, the caretaker's box, a school library and administrative rooms. The arms of this building, which are connected by the large break hall, contain specialist and classrooms. There are two other buildings that can only be reached via the schoolyard, on the one hand the south building, built in 1957 (and renovated in 2013), which often functions as the main building of the upper level, and the west building, built in 2004 instead of the "pavilion". Years five, six and 10 are housed in the west building and there are rooms for afternoon practice lessons. The school's sports field and gym are around 250 m away .
