Matthias Jessen (born September 12, 1677 in Jena , † March 20, 1736 in Altona ) was a Danish legation secretary and president in Altona.

Live and act

Matthias Jessen was the third of six children of his father of the same name and Eva Chemnitz (around 1642–1703), daughter of Christian Chemnitz . He spent most of his childhood in Altona. In the summer of 1696 he went to Leipzig to attend the local university law study. At the end of 1703, the Danish king appointed him legation secretary at the court of the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , making Jessen ambassador at the same time. After being recalled in September 1706, Jessen initially worked as a clerk and moved to London at the end of 1708 . In the following 23 years he worked here as legation secretary and, due to the personal union, probably also stayed in Hanover from 1714.

At the end of 1731 King Christian VI dismissed . the Altona chief president Christian Detlev von Reventlow . Matthias Jessen took over the post of President as his successor. The basis was the city constitution of 1705, but not the constitution of 1713, which had been used in Reventlow. A little later Jessen was also appointed to the judiciary . Influence on the election of Jesse by Christian VI. had possibly one of Frederick IV. pronounced Matthias Jessen's father Exspektanz for the eldest son Johann Christian, who was, however, died in the meantime.

Jessen held the office of president until 1736. During the four-year term of office, he did not develop his own profile. His appointment on the basis of the older constitution, which gave Jessen a less prominent position than his predecessor, indicates that the Danish king saw the political situation in Altona as consolidated. Earlier assumptions that the president gained greater municipal say with the beginning of Jessen's aegis must be viewed as outdated. Neither the president nor the chief president belonged to the municipal self-government, but were assigned to the Danish king and had to represent his interests. Matthias Jessen was succeeded by Bernhard Leopold Volkmar von Schomburg as President.

Matthias Jessen was married to Dorothea Elisabeth Heldt (* 1684 in Braunschweig ; † 1752 in Altona) since 1733 . There were no children from the marriage.

Since 1950, Jessenstrasse in Altona-Altstadt has been a reminder of Matthias Jessen and the father of the same name.
