Detlev von Reventlow

Detlev (or in Danish Ditlev ) von Reventlow (born October 28, 1712 at Gut Altenhof ; † December 5, 1783 in Kiel ) was a Schleswig-Holstein knight , Danish count and statesman and curator of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

origin

Detlev von Reventlow was the eldest son of Cay Friedrich von Reventlow (1685–1762) and his wife Hedwig Ida nee. v. Buchwaldt (1690–1761).

Life

In 1730 he began studying political science at the University of Kiel, which he continued in Frankfurt (Oder) and Leipzig . In 1735 he completed his studies with the dissertation De nexu foederum inter imperium Romano-Germanicum et regnum Daniae .

After completing his studies, in 1736 he became a chamberlain to Sophie Magdalena , Christian VI's wife . from Denmark . 1746 it appointed Frederick V for Chamberlain , 1749 the Provincial President of Altona . From 1751 to 1754 he was the Danish envoy in Paris . After his recall, he was entrusted with the education of the Crown Prince, who later became King Christian VII , as Hofmeister . In 1759 he became a secret conference councilor, in 1763 chief steward of the crown prince and member of the council, the actual government, in 1764 first deputy of the pension chamber, the West Indian-Guinean pension and general customs chamber, and also a member of the chief tax office. He was instrumental in the preparation of the exchange negotiations with Russia for the acquisition of the Gottorf stake from Holstein .

As the prince's educator, he showed excessive harshness towards the motherless child. After the death of Frederick V, Christian VII removed him from all of his offices in January 1766. Reventlow, however, was rewarded with the elephant order in recognition of his services rendered so far in 1766 and on December 14, 1767 raised to the Danish feudal state . Shortly afterwards he was called back to the council by Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff and appointed Lord Chamberlain in 1766 and Deputy in the Economics and Commerce College in 1767. But when Johann Friedrich Struensee dissolved the council in 1770, Reventlow lost all his offices and retired to his estates.

After Struensee's fall in 1773 he became Principal-Commissarius for the conclusion of the Treaty of Tsarskoye Selo , with which the entire Danish state was established. In 1775 Andreas Peter Bernstorff appointed him curator of the University of Kiel, which he stayed until the end of his life. Under his curature, the Indigenous Law was passed in 1776, which stipulated that future civil servants of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein had to have studied in Kiel for at least two years. This law gave the university a great boost.

Detlef Reventlow inherited the Altenhof and Glasau estates from his father. In 1764 he bought Gut Emkendorf from Jean Henri Desmercières , in 1767 from Detlef von Reventlow Gut Wittenberg and in 1782 the neighboring Gut Aschau estate .
