Matthias Rath (philosopher)

Matthias Otto Rath (born May 9, 1959 in Schweinfurt ) is a German philosopher, media scientist and educator. He is professor of philosophy at the Ludwigsburg University of Education .

Life

Rath studied education , philosophy , psychology , sociology and German at the Catholic University of Eichstätt . In 1984 he graduated with a diploma in education. He then worked as a research assistant for Bernhard Schleißheimer at the Philosophy Department at the Catholic University of Eichstätt . In 1987 he was with his dissertation 'principle of responsibility' and the question of ethics for the scientific age in philosophy Dr. phil. doctorate, in 1992 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on "The order of thinking. Investigations on the dispute over psychologism in German philosophy" in philosophy for Dr. phil. habil.

From 1994 he worked for Bertelsmann AG , initially as head of the policy department on the Group's Executive Board in Gütersloh and member of the group's group of speakers, from January 1995 as deputy head and from January 1996 as head of press and public relations at Bertelsmann Buch AG ( today the Random House publishing group ) in Munich . From November 1996 Rath took over the professorship for philosophy at the Ludwigsburg University of Education.

In addition to his university activities, Rath was a member from 2001 to 2006 and also chairman of the Baden-Württemberg Education Council from 2004 to 2006. 2006–2007 he was a member of the inquiry commission of the citizenship of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg "Consequences of the new PISA study for Hamburg's school development". From 2005 to 2014, Rath was also the scientific director of the State Institute for School Development of the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Matthias Rath is married to the German and media scientist Gudrun Marci-Boehncke .

research

From a scientific point of view, Rath primarily deals with issues of applied ethics , especially media ethics , and questions that border philosophy on social science . In addition, he is active in empirical media research , v. a. youth media research and media education research. He is active in the media ethics network and the media and communication ethics section of the German Society for Media and Communication Studies . Matthias Rath is a founding member of the German Society for Media Impact Research and is on the board of the Society for Media Education Research .
