Matthieu Arnold (born September 14, 1965 in Strasbourg ) is professor of modern and contemporary history at the theological faculty of the University of Strasbourg .

Life

After his school days at the Lyceum Bartholdi in Colmar , where he passed the Baccalauréat C (Mathematics) in 1983 , Arnold continued his studies at the Protestant Theological Faculty of Strasbourg. In 1994, he was with a thesis on the correspondence of Martin Luther doctorate . From 1992 to 1994 he completed his research on Luther at the Leibniz Institute for European History in Mainz . From September 1994 to August 1997 he was pastor of the Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine . In 1996 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the Reformation and the history of theology in the first half of the 20th century. On September 1, 1997, he was appointed professor at the Faculty of Protestant Theology in Strasbourg. He followed Marc Lienhard to the chair for the history of modern Christianity. In September 2002 he was appointed as the first Protestant theologian as a junior at the Institut universitaire de France . He stayed until August 2007. He then taught history of modern Christianity at the University of Neuchâtel and the University of Basel . Since December 2015 he has been an associate professor at the Center d'études œcuméniques de Strasbourg .

Matthieu Arnold is married and has two children.

Arnold's research has two main focuses: The Reformation in the 16th century ( Martin Luther , Johannes Calvin , Martin Bucer , Johannes Sturm ..., women and dissidents of the Reformation ) and the Protestant theology of the 20th century ( Albert Schweitzer , Oscar Cullmann , Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the church struggle , sermons 1914–1918 ...).
