Life

Maurice Nadeau was a war orphan; he attended school in Saint-Cloud , where he came into contact with politics. In 1930 he became a member of the French communist party PCF , from which he was expelled in 1932. He then joined the Ligue communiste de France, which was headed by Pierre Naville . During these years he met Louis Aragon , André Breton , Jacques Prévert and Benjamin Péret .

As a professor, Nadeau taught from 1936 to 1945 and worked with Breton on the magazine Clé . During the occupation of France by the National Socialists , he joined the Resistance and was able to escape deportation . In 1945 he published his book on Surrealism, Histoire du Surréalisme , which is still a reference work in the present.

During the period of liberation from 1944, Nadeau worked for seven years for the journal of the Resistance, Combat , which was headed by Albert Camus . He was responsible for the literary section and got to know authors such as Georges Bataille , René Char , Henri Michaux , Claude Simon and Henry Miller ; he also began to work on the publication of the oeuvre of the Marquis de Sade and stood up for the criticized writer Louis-Ferdinand Celine .

A long period of collaboration in publishing houses and magazines followed. For example, Nadeau was a literary critic at Mercure de France , France-Observateur , L'Express , worked for the publisher Éditions Julliard, where he published the literary magazine Les Lettres nouvelles from 1953 to 1976 . With Jean-Paul Sartre he signed and distributed the manifesto of the 121st in 1960 during the Algerian war . From 1965 to 1977 he worked for the Robert Denoël publishing house and later for Robert Laffont.

On March 15, 1966, Nadeau and François Erval published the first issue of the literary magazine La Quinzaine littéraire, which has been published twice a month to this day, the 1000th edition of which was published in 2009. The title Les Lettres Nouvelles became the name of his publisher from 1977, which was renamed Éditions Maurice Nadeau in 1984.

Maurice Nadeau died in Paris at the age of 102.
