Maurice Sauvé

Maurice Sauvé PC CC (born September 20, 1923 in Montreal , Québec , † April 13, 1992 ) was a Canadian economist and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada who was a member of the lower house and minister. His wife, Jeanne Sauvé, was Canada's first woman as Speaker of the House of Commons in 1980 and as the first woman Governor General of Canada between 1984 and 1990 .

Life

After attending school, Sauvé completed a course of study, which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed another law degree with a Bachelor of Laws and later also acquired a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ). He then worked as an economist and in 1948 married Jeanne Mathilde Benoît , who later became a member of parliament and a minister, and was also the first Canadian woman to hold the offices of Speaker of the House of Commons and Governor General of Canada. Between 1949 and 1952 he was president of the newly founded World Assembly of Youth (WAY) in London .

In the general election of June 18, 1962 , Sauvé was elected for the first time as a candidate for the Liberal Party as a member of the lower house and represented the constituency of Îles-de-la-Madeleine in this . In the general election on June 25, 1968 , he ran in the constituency of Saint-Hyacinthe , but suffered a defeat there and thus left the lower house. At the beginning of his membership in parliament he was initially from 16 May to 21 December 1963 chairman of the special committee for defense.

On February 3, 1963, Sauvé was appointed by Prime Minister Lester Pearson as Minister of Forestry in the 19th Government of Canada . He then became Minister of Forestry and Rural Development as part of a cabinet reshuffle on October 1, 1966, and held this post in the Canadian cabinet of 20 April 1968, succeeded by Pearson, Pierre Trudeau . After losing his parliamentary mandate, he resigned from the government on July 5, 1968, as the constitution stipulated that ministers had to have a parliamentary mandate.

On May 14, 1984, Sauvé was named Companion des Order of Canada as the husband of the new Governor General . As the governor general's husband, he held the official title of Viceregal Consort of Canada and was also Chancellor of the University of Ottawa from 1985 to 1991 .
