Mauro Bernardi (born August 11, 1957 in Selva di Val Gardena ) is an Italian mountaineer and former ski racer . He specialized in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom . Later he was one of the sponsors of mountaineering in South Tyrol and wrote several books on the subject.

biography

Bernardi has been a member of the Gardena Ski Club since childhood . The first points in the World Cup he won in December 1977 with fifth place in the slalom of Madonna di Campiglio . A month later followed a second place in Zwiesel and a third place in Wengen . At the 1978 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he finished fifth in slalom and eleventh in giant slalom. At the end of the 1977/78 season, he finished fifth in the slalom discipline.

As a result, Bernardi could no longer quite maintain this high level. In the World Cup winter 1978/79 he was in the top ten twice, and once in the 1979/80 season. He took part in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , but was eliminated in both slalom and giant slalom. In 1981 he resigned from top-class sport. At Italian championships he was a total of once second and twice third.

After his resignation, Bernardi started his own business as a ski instructor and mountain guide . He climbed numerous mountains, including the Ama Dablam in the Himalayas and the Alpamayo in the Andes . In the Dolomites , he opened 25 new climbing routes and the fixed rope from the Vallunga to Stevia hut in the Puez . Bernardi wrote several articles in mountaineering magazines and from 2002 published three climbing guides for the mountains around Val Gardena , Cortina d'Ampezzo and in the Rosengarten .
