Max Felmy

Max Felmy (born September 14, 1877 in Berlin , † August 15, 1965 in Banzkow near Schwerin ) was a German actor and opera singer .

Life

Max Felmy was born the son of a civil servant. He attended high school in Berlin and was supposed to study at his parents' request, but secretly took acting lessons. He first worked as an actor at the theaters in Zwickau and Ilmenau from 1895–1897. In 1895 he made his debut as Don Karlos at the Zwickau City Theater . He then went to Berlin, where he took up singing studies with Wilhelm Müller-Kannberg , a well-known hero tenor of the Berlin court opera , and trained as a singer.

As an opera singer he made his debut at the Stadttheater Plauen in 1901 , where he sang 25 new roles in his first season. In 1903 he moved to the Cologne City Theater . From 1904 to 1906 he was engaged again at the Plauen Theater. This was followed by positions in Würzburg, Sondershausen, at the Berlin Theater des Westens (1906–1907) and in Kiel. The conductor Felix Mottl heard him in Kiel and signed him to the Munich Court Opera (1907–1908). In 1907 he took part in the Mozart Festival in Munich as Pedrillo in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail (conductor: Felix Mottl). He was then a member of the ensemble at the Zurich City Theater from 1908–1910 . From 1910 to the end of the First World War (1918) he was a member of the Hoftheater Mannheim , where he appeared in Wagner performances (as David, Mime) under the direction of Wilhelm Furtwängler .

He made guest appearances at the Leipzig Opera House (1901), the Dresden Court Opera (1905), the Bremen City Theater (1906), the Cologne Opera House (1912), the Basel City Theater (1913), the Frankfurt Opera House (1915 and 1916), and the Stuttgart Court Theater , at the Wiesbaden Court Theater and at the Nuremberg Opera House .

From 1918 he worked with a short break until the 1930/31 season as a lyric tenor, tenor buffo and actor at the Schwerin State Theater . There he made his debut as Lyonel in the opera Martha . Felmy's other successful roles in Schwerin were Manrico in The Troubadour , the title role in Hoffmann's Tales , Rudolf in La Boheme and the Duke in Rigoletto . In May 1928 he was appointed chamber singer in Schwerin under GMD Willibald Kaehler .

As a lyric tenor u. a. in Berlin, Leipzig and Munich. At the beginning he sang numerous classical roles, including a. Tamino in The Magic Flute , Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville , Tonio in The Regiment's Daughter and George Brown in The White Lady . During his engagement at the Hoftheater Mannheim, he also switched to buffo and character subjects. He now also regularly sang roles like Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail , Georg in Der Waffenschmied , Veit in Undine , Wenzel in The Bartered Bride and the Mime in Das Rheingold .

Felmy was also a valued operetta singer . Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus , Barinkay in Der Zigeunerbaron and Symon in Der Bettelstudent were among his star roles.

Occasionally he also worked for the silent film , for example in the crime film The Secret of the Gambling Hell by Sebastopol (1920) alongside Eugen Klöpfer , who also directed this film. Felmy also worked as an amateur magician.

In 1949 Felmy ended his artistic career. He is the uncle of the actor Hansjörg Felmy .
