Carl Hermann Robert Dietrich Max Kuchel (born November 3, 1859 in Altona , † May 21, 1933 in Klein Flottbek ) was a Hamburg landscape and portrait painter.

Life

Max Kuchel was born the son of the painter Theodor Kuchel (1819–1885) and was a cousin of Friedrich Kallmorgen . From 1880 to 1881 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Heinrich Lauenstein and from 1885 to 1888 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich under Fritz Baer . From 1883 to 1885 he worked as a drawing teacher in Altona. From 1889 to 1909 he ran a schoolgirls studio for landscape and still life painting. In 1895 he married his student Marie Julie Amalie Helling, daughter of a wealthy Hamburg merchant.

Max Kuchel went on study trips to Holstein Switzerland , Bohemia and Holland . He also visited the islands of Rügen and Vilm and the Darss in 1881, 1897, 1898, 1904 and 1911 . From 1917 to 1919 he was a member of the Altona Artists 'Association and from 1888 a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 , of which he was secretary for many years. In the district of Klein Flottbek belonging to Hamburg-Othmarschen , the Kuchelweg was named after him and his father in 1951. His residential and studio house built there in 1912 is now a listed building.
