Maxime Maufra
Maxime Maufra (* 17th May 1861 in Nantes , † 23. May 1918 in Poncé-sur-le-Loir , France , actually Maximilien Emile Louis Maufra ) was a French painter of Impressionism .
Life
Maufra began to paint at the age of 18, inspired by two painters from Nantes, the Leduc brothers, Charles Leduc (* 1831) and Alfred Leduc (around 1850–1913). In the beginning, however, he only devoted himself to painting temporarily, as he was a businessman and painted in his spare time from 1884 to 1890. During this time he got to know the Impressionist painting style and exhibited his work in the Paris Salon in 1886 .
In 1890 he became a professional painter, left Nantes and moved to Brittany , where he met Paul Gauguin and Paul Sérusier . When he returned from Brittany in 1892 he was the first resident of the Bateau-Lavoir studio house in Paris, the most famous resident of which was Pablo Picasso from 1904 . Maufra had his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1894 at the Le Barc de Boutteville gallery.

In his paintings Maufra occasionally cited the pointillist painting technique of Camille Pissarro or Alfred Sisley and also adopted the strong colors of the powerful paintings from the Pont-Aven school . However, he remained an independent artist who dedicated his work to the beauty of nature. His works are represented in museums around the world, for example the Musée d'Orsay , the Tate Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago .
