Medardus Höbelt

Medardus Höbelt (born July 2, 1914 in Weißkirchlitz near Teplitz-Schönau ; † February 1, 2011 in Altenburg ) was a German musician , painter and church interior designer.

Life

Medardus Höbelt studied music in Munich from 1932 to 1936, already as a child . He then completed an apprenticeship at the ceramic college in Teplitz-Schönau. In 1938 he was called up for military service. During the Second World War he fought on different fronts. After he was released from English captivity, he ended up in Wolfenbüttel , where he temporarily found work. In 1948 he began studying at the Art Academy in Dresden . There he was a student of Professor Bruno Seener . He then worked as a painter in a decorative painting company. Here he also learned the technique of wall and fresco painting .

Since 1952 he worked as a freelancer. As an artist, he devoted himself almost exclusively to sacred art . Many churches in the Saxon - Thuringian area were designed by him. A special focus of his work was the design and manufacture of lead and concrete glass windows , as well as Stations of the Cross , altar paintings and depictions of saints , preferably in pastel painting . He also created tabernacles , church candlesticks and crosses in wood and bronze . In later years he also wrote reflections on his sacred works of art.

From the age of 16 he dealt intensively with Dante's Divine Comedy , which had a strong influence on his life and work. His motto in life came from this work: It is love that moves the universe.

Productive well into old age, Medardus Höbelt died at the age of 97 in Altenburg and was buried in the main cemetery there.
