history

Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, namesake of the sanatorium

The building housing the median hospital Odenwald were from 1899 to 1901 as a sanatorium of the Hessian National Insurance Institute for lung diseases Builds Men. The building plot is located at the end of a valley north of Sandbach, today a district of Breuberg . The foundation stone was laid on March 22nd, 1899, the solemn inauguration of the Ernst-Ludwig-Heilstätte on March 22nd, 1901. On the day before the inauguration celebrations, at which the namesake, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig , was present, the whole night had to be worked through Completion of the main building.

The sanatorium was a popular clinic for spa guests from the Ruhr area , especially for miners with pneumonia . A therapy was developed which differed from the reclining cure that was customary at the time : “The conviction is breaking more and more that a strict work cure is extremely useful. The work prevents boredom and thus promotes institutional discipline. The patients, who, especially in the last few weeks, have been more inclined to excesses, can use their growing awareness of strength in a useful way. A patient who has already worked for a few weeks during the cure will be more resistant to the strains of the coming working hours. We see it as a further advantage that the sick can take a nice savings penny home with them when they are discharged. ”Next to the clinic building there was a small agricultural facility with vegetable patches and stables with animal husbandry, which supplied the clinic.

After a renovation in 1972, the sanatorium was converted into a sanatorium for general illnesses, and later into a clinic for cardiovascular and vascular patients. After it had been vacant for two years, it has been serving as a specialist clinic for psychosomatics, psychotherapy and addiction disorders since October 2008, initially under the name AHG-Klinik Hardberg . In 2016 the AHG was taken over by the Median group of companies (Median Nord GmbH); since then, the facility has been called Median Klinik Odenwald . The clinic can accommodate up to 152 patients who are cared for by around 100 employees.

The architect of the building was Viktor von Weltzien , a former employee of Gropius & Schmieden in Berlin , who has been in charge of the Hessian structural engineering in Darmstadt since 1888 . He was considered a specialist in TB sanatorium construction ( lung sanatoriums ).

The main building was originally a 52-meter-long structure with three stepped gables. It was rebuilt from 1952 by the architect Otto Erk from Bad König . The old building was sheathed and given a slightly curved shape facing the south by adding side wings. A typical building from the 1950s was created, which has only been changed insignificantly during further renovations since 1972 and 1984.

There are still two outbuildings designed by Weltzien. The former home of the head physician is a historicist villa with a stepped gable , stair tower and half-timbered tower , the interior of which shows a move towards Art Nouveau . The manager's house is a smaller country house with historicist half-timbered structures and an upper loggia gable in the Swiss house style , perched on a polygonal stand bay.
