history

Epitaph of the last Count Michael III in Wertheim . von Wertheim († 1556) in the local evangelical church

Sandbach was first mentioned in 770 as the location of a church, which had to give way to a new building in 1445, on which today's Protestant church goes back. The Counts of Wertheim have been buried here since the 15th century . On May 14, 1537, as in the entire Breuberg domain , the Reformation was introduced in Sandbach by decree from Countess Barbara zu Wertheim . Until the 19th century, Sandbach was dominated by agriculture. When Friedrich Veith founded the Veith-Werke here in 1903 as a factory for rubber tires (today the seat of Pirelli Deutschland GmbH), the place also became known as an industrial location. On October 1, 1971, on the occasion of the Hessian regional reform , Sandbach merged with the communities of Hainstadt, Wald-Amorbach and the city of Neustadt to form the new city of Breuberg, named after the castle located in the center of the municipality. From then on, the city administration sat in Sandbach, the largest district.
