With around 900 inhabitants, Rai-Breitenbach is one of the smaller districts of Breuberg in the Odenwaldkreis in Hesse , but has by far the largest district.

Geographical location

Where the Raibach and the Breitenbach , a right, southern tributary of the Mümling , enter the Mümling lowlands, the village of Rai-Breitenbach lies opposite Breuberg Castle . The centers of the two suburbs that have grown together, Raibach in the east and Breitenbach in the west, are only about 500 meters apart.

history

Rai-Breitenbach was created in 1858 when the villages of Raibach and Breitenbach merged into one municipality. On April 1, 1950, the community expanded by incorporating the hamlet of Mühlhausen , which is located in the valley of the Breitenbach .

Raibach was mentioned in a document as early as 798 in connection with a donation to the Lorsch monastery . The church in the Rai-Breitenbach district is likely to date from around the turn of the millennium and is therefore the oldest surviving church in the city of Breuberg. The frescoes from 1498 in the chancel of the church are worth seeing. Both places belonged to the Breuberg rule until 1806 .

To the south of the village, in a side valley of the Mümling, directly on the Breitenbach on the road to Lützel-Wiebelsbach, are the remains of a fixed house , the Mühlhäuser Schlößchen , from the 14th century.

One of the few probably Celtic finds in the region comes from Rai-Breitenbach , the so-called Raibacher picture . It was discovered in 1919 on Obersberg south of the village.

On December 31, 1970, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, Rai-Breitenbach was voluntarily incorporated into the city of Neustadt , which in turn became part of the new city of Breuberg on October 1, 1971. For Rai-Breitenbach, as for every district of the newly created municipality, a local district was formed with a local advisory board and local councilor .

Bioenergy village

The place is about to become the first bioenergy village in the Odenwald district. It is planned to supply the majority of all households in the village with heat with the help of a central wood chip heating system via the pipes of a local heating network . For this purpose, an interest group was set up. A feasibility study was completed in May 2006. On July 2nd, 2006 a cooperative was founded, which counts the planning, implementation and operation of the bioenergy heating system among its tasks.

Construction work on the biomass cogeneration plant began on November 5, 2007, and on August 9, 2008, it was handed over to its destination at a ceremonial opening. (Total costs 3.2 million euros, this corresponds to 4500 euros per inhabitant)
