Mehmet Kudret Ayiter

Mehmet Kudret Ayiter (born August 31, 1919 in Göttingen , † April 13, 1986 in Ankara ) was a Turkish legal scholar and professor of Roman law . He is one of the founders of the Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi .

Life

Kudret Ayiter was born in Göttingen as the second of three children to a German-Turkish family. His father was Dr. Mehmed Ferid Ayiter, his mother the German Feride Ayiter alias Margarethe Lux. When he was four years old, the family returned to Turkey , where he went to school in Istanbul . a. the İstanbul Lisesi . In 1937 the family moved to Ankara , where he was the first to graduate with honors from the Faculty of Law at Ankara University . During the Second World War he served as a military judge for 2½ years . After his military service he married the professor Nûşin Menemencioğlu-Ayiter . From this marriage the daughters Emine Elif Ayiter and Fatma Feride emerged.

After his retirement he fell ill and died a few years later in April 1986. According to his wishes, he was buried in Izmir in the Bornova cemetery. Ayiter spoke Turkish , German , Italian and Latin very well and could also speak English . He bequeathed over 5,000 works on private law , Roman law , legal history and comparative law in German, French and Italian to the University Library Dokuz Eylül .

Career

After graduating from the Ankara Law Faculty in 1940, he started his career there as an assistant and was a student of Prof. Koschaker , with whom he graduated in 1948/49 and translated the scripts he had prepared for Roman law into Turkish. In order to deepen his basic knowledge in this direction, he was sent to Rome twice for two years each with a scholarship . He then taught Roman law in Turkey. In the years after his doctorate in Roman law, he also taught comparative law .

Kudret Ayiter is one of the founding members of the Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi and laid the foundation stone for the university library. After completing his habilitation in 1955 , he worked as a private lecturer at Ankara University . In 1961 he was appointed associate professor at the same university . From 1964 to 1966 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law in Ankara. On his numerous trips to conferences he was at numerous research centers in Europe. He was also interested in history , especially Phrygia . In 1972 he found portraits of eight Frigen in Germany .
