action

Sardinia, in the present: nine-year-old Vittoria grows up with her parents Tina and Umberto in a remote village. At a rodeo competition, the red-haired girl notices blonde Angelica, who is drunk and tries to hook up with a man. In fact, Vittoria's caring mother and Angelica, who has a drinking problem, know each other. Tina has been visiting the woman for a long time on her run-down farm, where Angelica lives the day with some old horses and a loyal dog. Angelica has accumulated over 28,000 euros in debt over time, which is why she is threatened with eviction. So she decides, to Tina's relief, to vacate her farm in a month and move back to mainland Italy.

Tina follows Angelica's request and one day brings Vittoria to the farm. The girl is enthusiastic about the animals and begins to visit Angelica secretly. The two go on joint excursions, including to the Supramonte Mountains and swimming in the sea. Angelica tries to relieve Vittoria of her fear of heights and teach her to dive. They begin to grow closer together. Tina finds out about the meeting by chance and fears that she will lose Vittoria, since Angelica is actually her birth mother. In return, Tina had assured her of continued support. She asks Angelica, who has meanwhile been working in the fish factory where Tina and Umberto also work, to leave several times. But Angelica does not respond. Not even when Tina offers her all of the family's financial savings, which leads to an argument with Umberto.

Vittoria soon realizes who her birth mother is. Tina tries to break her bond with Angelica. She takes Vittoria to Angelica's local pub the night before her 10th birthday, where they catch her drunk having sex with a potential suitor. However, the girl throws herself between Angelica and the man and from then on decides to live with her birth mother. Despite the break with her daughter, Tina organizes the planned birthday party the next day without Vittoria. To Angelica's annoyance, Vittoria soon misses her adoptive mother. When the two of them set off for a necropolis in the mountains, where Angelica suspects a hidden source of money after a tip in the bar, a heated argument ensues. Vittoria refuses to climb into a narrow crevice, curses Angelica and escapes.

The desperate Angelica searches for Vittoria and returns to her farm, where she is confronted with the angry horse dealer Bruno, to whom she still owes money. Bruno knocks them down. In the meantime, Vittoria returns to the crevice. She climbs in, but her search is unsuccessful. When she returns to Angelica's court, she finds her birth mother injured and passed out. She then tries to transport Angelica with the help of a carpet. In the dunes they both meet the desperate Tina who has been looking for them in her car. While Tina supports the dazed Angelica as she walks, the excited Vittoria tells the two of her descent into the crevice. She takes off her shirt and begins to fight the pace of the three of them.
