Mella is a city and a municipality in the far north of the Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba on the border with the province of Holguín . The main industry is sugar growing.

The place of Mangos de Baraguá is of historical interest , where General Antonio Maceo delivered a protest note against the peace of Zanjón to the Spaniards.

The Municipio Mella has 33,667 inhabitants spread over an area of 335 km², which corresponds to a population density of 100.4 per km².

The small town of Mella was originally called Miranda, after the sugar factory around which it was built. After the Cuban Revolution , with the nationalization of the sugar industry in August 1961, both the factory and the site were renamed in honor of communist activist and student leader Julio Antonio Mella .
