The Mellnitz-Üselitzer Wiek is a scenic area in the south of the island of Rügen near Poseritz . After the construction of the new Rügen bridge over the Strelasund between Stralsund and Altefähr , the Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -baugesellschaft mbH (Deges) undertook as a compensatory measure for rewetting the Wiek as reparation for environmental damage.

Before it was drained , the Wiek was last recorded as a body of water on a Prussian Urmes table sheet from 1830. It had open access to the Puddeminer Wiek and extended over 32 hectares. With the construction of a dike around the middle of the 20th century, the breakthrough was closed and the area drained by means of a pumping station. Since then, the reclaimed area, which was around two meters below the water level of the Greifswald Bodden, was used for agriculture until 1990.

Deges planned the rewetting in 2012. The area should be about four times the former Üselitzer Wiek. The cost was estimated at 1.9 million euros. Of this, 1.5 million euros were used for the acquisition of arable land and grassland.

In 2010 a flood structure was built on the neighboring Puddeminer Wiek. Two automatically controllable flood gates with a total width of 12 meters were installed to regulate the water exchange, as well as two pumping stations and pumping stations. From August 19, 2011, the area was flooded. After flooding, the Mellnitz-Üselitzer Wiek should be two meters deep at its deepest point and occupy an area of 124 hectares; the entire renaturation area measures 240 hectares.

Just a short time after the flooding, the area has developed into a nationally important transit and resting area for water birds, waders and cranes . Thousands of ducks such as wigeons , mallards and tufted ducks as well as gray geese rest here . When the tide is low, wader species such as the lapwing and golden plover rest in the Wiek. A large colony of cormorants has established itself in the southwestern part of the Wiek.
