The Olisbeoideae are a subfamily in the plant family of the black- mouthed plants (Melastomataceae) within the order of the myrtle-like (Myrtales). The distribution is pantropical .

description

They are trees and bushes . The stalked, simple leaves are arranged opposite to one another, as in most other myrtle-like species . The stomata are paracytic.

The hermaphroditic, small mostly blue flowers are radial symmetry to somewhat zygomorphic and four to five-fold. There are equally many sepals and petals . There are usually twice as many (four to five, eight or ten) free stamens as there are petals. The usually four to five (three to 14) carpels have become an under constant ovary overgrown. The pollination is usually by insects ( Entomophilie ). One to five-seeded berries are formed.

Systematics

The subfamily Olisbeoideae now belongs to the Melastomataceae Juss family again . Synonyms for Olisbeoideae Burnett are: Memecylaceae DC., Mouririaceae Gardner, Memecyloideae Meisn. The name Memecyloideae Meisn. was in Pl. Vasc. Gene. , Tab.Diagn. 111, Comm. 79 in April 1838, but the name Olisbeoideae Burnett was in Outl. Bot. , P. 725 published in June 1835 - according to the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), the earliest published name is valid.

The subfamily Olisbeoideae contains about six to seven genera with about 435 species:

  • Lijndenia Customs. & Moritzi
  • Memecylon L. ( Scutula Lour. , Valikaha Adans. ): With about 300 to 400 species that onlythrivein the shrub layer in the rainforests of the Paleotropic :
    • Memecylon edule Roxb. : This evergreen, large shrub or tree is also called the ironwood tree. The fruits, which are only about 1 cm in size, turn from green to yellow, then red and black when ripe, and are edible.
  • Mouriri Aubl. ( Aulacocarpus O.Berg , Mouriria Juss. , Orth. Var., Olisbaea Hook.f. , orth. Var., Olisbea DC. ): With about 85 species.
  • Pternandra Jack ( Apteuxis handle. , Ewyckia flower , Kibbesia Walp ., Orth.var ., Kibessia DC. , Macroplacis flower , Rectomitra flower )
  • Spathandra Guill. & Perr.
  • Votomita Aubl. ( Coryphadenia Morley , Glossoma Schreb. , Meliandra Ducke )
