Mass in C major KV 257

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mass in C major , KV 257, generally known as the Credo Mass or (to distinguish it from the Small Credomesse KV 192) called the Great Credo Mass , is a mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for soloists , four-part choir , orchestra and organ . Leopold Mozart called it “Spaur Messe” in a letter to Wolfgang Amadeus in 1778.

The work is sometimes referred to as the Missa brevis , but with a playing time of approx. 25 minutes it exceeds the scope of a brevis mass. In the set of parts found in Brixen, which apparently was used for the first performance, it is titled Missa solemnis in C. Leopold Mozart wrote it in his anthology Missa longa, but it is about 5–6 minutes shorter than the Missæ longæ KV 167 and KV 262, which had previously been composed by Wolfgang Amadeus .

history

The mass was premiered on November 17, 1776 in Salzburg Cathedral , the occasion was the ordination of Salzburg canon Ignaz von Spaur (1729–1779) by Archbishop Hieronymus as bishop. Spaur had been canon of Salzburg since 1755 and canon in Brixen since 1763 . In 1776 he took up the office of the diocese coadjutor of Brixen, with an assured successor as bishop.

Mozart created a new mass for this festival. On the one hand, this process is explained by the offices of Leopold and Wolfgang Amadé at the Salzburg court as Kapell- and Concertmaster , on the other hand, by the friendly relationship between the two of them and Count Ignaz von Spaur. Ignaz von Spaur almost certainly took this work with him to Brixen when he moved permanently from Salzburg to Brixen in 1776. The sheet music could be recognized as that of the world premiere in 2007, and so the riddle of identifying the “Spaur Mass” by Hildegard Herrmann-Schneider was solved. Previously, for decades, following an unproven assumption by Alfred Einstein in the 3rd edition of the Köchel catalog, the Missa brevis in C major KV 258 had been viewed as a Spaur mass; the Missa longa in C major KV 262 was also considered a possible candidate.
