Mesut Şen (born December 6, 1944 in Antalya , † August 2, 2020 in Bursa ) was a Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Bursaspor , he is very strongly associated with this club. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. Together with his teammate and strike partner Ersel Altıparmak , he was formative for the first decade of the club's history. So he acted part of his time for Bursaspor as team captain.

Player career

Şen learned to play football in the youth department of Galatasaray Istanbul . As a teenager he visited a close friend in the city of Bursa and during this time he took part in soccer games on the city's football fields . Here he was noticed by those in charge of the local football club Bursa Akınspor , who committed Şen for a transfer fee of 50 Turkish Lira . For this club he played until 1963. In the 1962/63 season his club was champion of the Bursa Futbol Ligi and he himself was the top scorer in this league.

After Akınspor merged with four other clubs from the city of Bursa to Bursaspor in the summer of 1963 , the squad of the new club was composed of the players of these five clubs. So Şen also became part of the founding squad of Bursaspor. With this newly founded club, Şen then took part in the second-highest Turkish league, which was also newly introduced in the summer of 1963, which was then known as Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi . Despite his age of 19, he came in his first season for Bursaspor in 15 out of 24 possible league games and was one of the most frequently used players in his club. In his second season he prevailed as a regular player. With his two strike partners Mustafa Güvenç and Ersel Altıparmak he formed a successful storm trio, with Şen drawing attention to himself as one of the most successful goalscorers of his club with eight goals this season. Over the entire course of the second division season 1964/65 , Şen's team fought head-to-head with the traditional Istanbul club Vefa SK for the second Turkish second division championship. At the end of the season, the championship was tied for points, but given the poorer goal difference to Vefa. In the following season, Şen again played with his team for a long time for the second division championship, this time the league was finished in 3rd place in the table and again the hoped-for promotion to the 1st league was missed. Şen scored six goals this season and was again one of the most important performers of his team. Finally, in the second division season 1966/67, the hoped-for championship and thus promotion to the 1st league succeeded. Under the direction of head coach Sabri Kiraz , the team prevailed with a two-point lead against Samsunspor . Şen was involved in this success with three goals this season and several assists.

In the first first division season in the club's history, Şen's team caused a surprise and finished the league as a newcomer in sixth place in the table. Şen contributed eight goals this season to this success, becoming the club's most successful goalscorer and forming the storm trio with his new strike partners Haluk Erdemoğlu and Mesut Şen. In the next season, the season 1968/69 , the previous year's performance was exceeded. The club finished the league in 5th place in the table and reached the semi-finals in the Turkish Football Cup . Şen played a major role in both successes. With three league goals and two cup hits, he was one of the most successful goal scorers of his team in both competitions. Because of this performance, he was appointed to the squad of the Turkish national team in the summer of 1968 . Up to the 1973/74 season, Şen played continuously for Bursaspor and ended the season with this one more time as third and sixth in the table.

In the summer of 1973 Şen moved within the 1st division to Beşiktaş Istanbul . For this club he played for the next two seasons without being able to establish himself as a regular player. During this time he was able to win all national competitions with Beşiktaş except the Turkish championship. At the end of the 1975/76 season, he ended his career.

National team

Şen began his international career with a commitment for the Turkish U-21 national team .

After Şen had delivered a convincing performance in the 1968/69 season, he was appointed to the squad of the Turkish national team by the Turkish national coach Adnan Süvari . With this he took part in the RCD Cup in 1969 and won the tournament with his team before Iran .

In total, he completed eleven U-21 and eight A international appearances.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Şen switched to coaching. He coached the Bursaspor youth team from 1992 to 1993. For the 1994/95 season he tried his hand at Gönenenspor for the first time as head coach, but left this club after a few months. In 1997 he began to work again for the offspring of Bursaspor and continued this activity until 2008. He then worked in the same role at Bursa Merinosspor , the then second club of Bursaspor. After three years he returned to the offspring of Bursaspor. From summer 2013 to summer 2015 he was in charge of the youth team of Yeşil Bursa SK , another second team from Bursaspor.
