Metrickz (2019)

Metrickz (born October 7, 1990 in Osnabrück ), actually David Orhan Hansel , is a German rapper . He has released five solo albums since 2013, which were created in collaboration with his house producer X-plosive . He has been running the DEATHOFMAJOR label and a fashion line of the same name since 2018 .

Career

Childhood and youth

David Orhan Hänsel was born in Osnabrück in the autumn of 1990 to a father of Turkish origin and a German mother . From the age of seven he grew up with his single mother. The artist tried to teach him to draw and paint, but he showed no talent for this. Instead, he used his creativity in text writing and music production. For his musical work he used the stage name Metrickz. Through his stepfather, the bobsleigh driver Donat Ertel , he also developed a fondness for fitness and athletics .

Musical career

Influenced by the music of the Aggro Berlin label , he began rapping himself at the age of 16. After he had published his first songs online in 2007, his first publication for free download appeared a year later under the title Kampfansage . In 2012 he appeared as a guest on B-Tight 's fourth album Drinne . He was also heard on Der Asiate's Der Reiskanzler . With Valentina his first solo single was released, 2013. The songs produced by X-plosive generated more attention and were discussed in numerous media. In autumn he followed up with his debut album Ultraviolett , which he released without a label or management. As a guest rapper, he was able to win over Silla , JokA , Swiss , Kayef and Liont . The latter then invited Metrickz to his first album Löwenkind . In 2014 the EP Kamikaze followed , which was advertised with the release Durch die Stadt .

Metrickz had his breakthrough with his second album Ultraviolett 2 at the end of 2015. The publication, distributed by the Warner Music Group , entered the German charts at number 4. It was also able to position itself in Austria and Switzerland. The EP Phantom was released as a supplement to the box edition of Ultraviolett 2 . In 2016 he recorded the tracks Mein Leben with RAF Camora for the album Ghøst and the single Villa , which can be found on his EP RAW . Shortly before the turn of the year, Metrickz released another EP with Nova . The following summer, the rapper appeared on the bonus EP for Bushido's twelfth album Black Friday . Metrickz 'third album Xenon followed in August via Soulfood . He added the sketch EP Shadow to the box edition . In a conversation with the Westfälische Nachrichten , he described it as a “ tough album ” that was created at a time when he felt “ angry and disappointed ”. Xenon entered the album charts at number 3. With incense and footprints , he released two songs as singles.

In 2018 Metrickz founded his own label DEATHOFMAJOR , which he runs and finances himself. At the same time he announced the start of a fashion collection of the same name. The first release was the album Ultraviolett 3 , which was accompanied by four singles. While the digital distribution took place via the company Believe , the deluxe box was sold exclusively via the label's homepage, so the physical sales have no influence on the chart placement. Thanks to the streams, Metrickz's fourth album went to number 68 in the German charts. The album Mufasa followed in mid-2019, the box edition of which was accompanied by the compilation Reloaded . For the first time after Ultraviolet 2 , a publication of the rapper positioned itself in the charts of all three German-speaking countries.

reception

Media meetings

So far, Metrickz's albums have mainly received attention in the music media. On the occasion of his first album Ultraviolett, Rap.de attested him “ potential ” and “ no weaknesses, but also no explicit strengths ” in “ matters of rap skills ”. Metrickz is an " ambitious artist ", but his debut seems " confusing, polyphonic, almost conceptless ". A “ constant change between hard lines and soft poetry can be seen ”. Every piece turns out to be " successful as a single product ", but Valentina in particular is reminiscent of Cro . 16bars.de sees “ energetic synths with catchy hooks, dubstep and drum 'n' bass additions ” and a “ dynamic rap style ” as the main characteristics of the album debut. Metrickz oscillates " between profound, determined serenity and the restless drive of a 23-year-old ". In addition, the " media-communicative part of his work " seems to be " at least as important an element for his advancement as the actual musical ".

The evaluation of the second work Ultraviolet 2 was more negative in the e-zine laut.de. Metrickz looks like a " savings fox version of Casper ". While he flowe “ solid ”, singing is not his “parade discipline ”. The album drowns " in well-groomed wanderlust and togetherness kitsch ". In the Laut.de reader charts, the album was ranked second among the “ most hated albums of the year ”. Ultraviolett 3 reads according to sound spy " like a confused mix of battlerap, pathetic love songs and calendar sayings ". In contrast, the sound image sounds " stringent ". Metrickz swaps “ Dancehall and Afro Trap ”, which dominated on his album Xenon , with “ synthetic and chorus-heavy beats with high beats ”. In his review of Ultraviolett 3 on MZEE, Steffen Bauer described Metrickz as a " rapper personification of hubris ". Either he rapper " of himself as godlike, miles superior to the competition " or about the " supposedly weaker sex ". Despite the " beats worth listening to " from X-plosive , the release is " striking, flat and extremely kitschy ".

Criticism from other artists

In an interview with the magazine Jetzt , the Austrian rapper Gerard spoke in detail about the album. From his point of view, ultraviolet has " a nice mixture of street attitude and poppy beats ". While the dubstep elements remind him of Example , he sees MoTrip and SD as “ role models ” with regard to rap technology . The single Valentina is " trendy and catchy, but not embarrassing ". In addition, she has “ a certain roughness ”. RAF Camora was also positive .
