Metsulfuron-methyl can be obtained by reacting O- sulfomoylbenzylbenzoate with ethyl chloroformate and 2-amino-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine.

Metsulfuronmethyl has been a permitted crop protection active ingredient for herbicide applications in the European Union since July 2001 . In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, plant protection products with this active ingredient are approved.
