The Mey GmbH & Co. KG is a global manufacturer of underwear and nightwear and lingerie based in Albstadt in Baden-Wuerttemberg . The company is 100 percent family owned.

history

Franz Mey started his own business in 1928 with a contract weaving workshop . In 1948 the two brothers Karl and Franz Mey founded the Gebrüder Mey OHG and began making clothing for women, men and children. In 1952 a factory building was built in Lautlingen .

In 1956 the company was run by Franz and Albrecht Mey (father and son). In 1959, the decision was made to specialize in women's underwear and to improve the quality of the products. In the same year the construction of the sewing branch in Dormettingen began. In 1961 and 1962 it was decided to do business together with the specialist trade and to offer the products exclusively under the “Mey” brand. In 1972 the aim was to build a new production building in Lautlingen and to equip it with modern machines and equipment, to achieve efficient production with high quality. In 1973 the Only Lycra system was introduced, which consisted of core yarn and improved the fit of the briefs.

After Franz Mey's death in 1974, the company was run by the brothers Albrecht Mey and Dietmar Mey. Two years later a new office building was built in Lautlingen. In 1978 another innovation from Mey came onto the market, the so-called Mey-Rand, which should not show the underwear when it is worn.

In 1984 the company management decided to include men's underwear in the range. With the takeover of a factory in Bitz , men's underwear was made for the first time. The company consists of two legally separate companies with two different headquarters in Albstadt and in Bitz. The sewing branch in Dormettingen received a new building in 1987. In 1991 a new plant was built in Celorico da Beira , Portugal . The following year, Mey men's underwear in Bitz received a new building.

"Swabian Boomerang"

As part of a sustainability initiative , Mey and Fischerwerke developed the so-called “Swabian Boomerang”, a laundry hanger that is collected and reused after the laundry has been sold. After its introduction in 1997, the ecologically oriented ironing cycle system created jobs at the Zollernalb workshops for people with disabilities (ZAK gGmbH) and helps save 80 tons of waste annually. The laundry hanger and the ironing cycle initiated by Mey were awarded the “Eco Product of the Year” environmental award in 1998.

In 2000 Mey expanded with a new building in Veresegyház in Hungary . In addition, a company advisory board was installed at Mey . After Albrecht Mey's death in 2002, the company management had to be reorganized. As a result, the management of women's and men's underwear was standardized and the division into sales / marketing, production and finance / services was implemented. Also in 2002, Mey introduced the “Meynight” line. With this, the company underpinned its international market leadership as a complete brand.

In 2006 Mey achieved second place in the “Fastest Growing Product Brand” category at the Best Brand Award. Thanks to far-reaching innovations and a strict expansion of the Albstadt location, the brand was named "Best Growth Brand" in 2009. The brands are rated according to their economic market success as well as their psychological attractiveness for consumers. The “Me, Myself and Mey” advertising campaign played an important role in this, in which numerous stars and celebrities such as Uschi Obermaier , Annett Louisan , Sarah Wiener , Esther Schweins or Jasmin Tabatabai and Rudolf Schenker dressed in Mey underwear from the star photographer Have Gabriele Oestreich (GABO) photographed. In 2010 Frank Schätzing , Cosma Shiva Hagen and Magdalena Neuner posed .

Mey is certified with bluesign® in 2012 , one of the strictest sustainability standards. This makes Mey the first underwear manufacturer with bluesign® certified products. In 2014, Focus Money, in cooperation with Germany, awarded Test Mey the 2014 Sustainability Award / Gold rating.

Production takes place 100 percent in the company's own factories. 67 percent of the added value occurs in Germany, with the consequences of short distances and compliance with strict social and ecological standards. Procurement takes place via around 170 suppliers, 55 percent of which are based in Germany and only five percent outside of Europe. Much of the cotton comes from one of the international Clean Clothes Campaign certified (Clean Clothes Campaign CCC) producers from Peru .

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the company produced protective masks.

Sewing machine museum

The Mey company maintains a sewing machine museum in Lautlingen , which shows the history of the sewing machine from its invention to its current development. The museum shows sewing machines from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a reconstruction of an English sewing machine from 1790. It is looked after by the "Albrecht Mey Foundation and Collection", of which Armin Mey was director for many years († 2013).
