Michael Andreas Russ (* 1945 in Berlin ) is an American photographer , photo designer and director .

Career

Russ came to the United States in 1958 and lived in Denver , Colorado . During high school, he took ballet classes at the Lillian Cushing School of Ballet and took acting classes on the side . At the age of 17 he enlisted in the US Army and was transferred to Germany. In 1965 he returned and took acting lessons at Renate Mannhardt's workshop in New York . At the same time, he began to take photos as an autodidact. Wilhelmina Cooper from Wilhelmina Models helped him get started in fashion photography.

Photographic work

Russ received his first orders for the magazines: Mens Wear , Esquire . ZOOM , True Magazine, and Playboy Press books. In 1971 he photographed a 23-page design showcase for GQ . In 1973 Russ became a cover artist for Art Direction Magazine . In 1976 he moved to Paris. There he created erotic rooms stories including in Playboy Germany , Vogue Hommes , IL , photojournalist , fashion avant-garde , Collections Magazine , Gunnar and Fashion International have been published.

In 1980 he went to Los Angeles, where he exhibited large-format photos for the first time in 1983 in the legendary China Club . These R prints are based on chemically tinted, hand-colored silver gelatine prints, which he calls TinTones . In the same year he photographed Tom Waits for the record cover Swordfishtrombones . Russ co-directed and choreographed the music video for the song In the Neighborhood . In 1986 Russ went back to Germany. TinTone portfolios, photo series and cover art have been published in Photo Technik International , Zoom , Playgirl , Das Magazin , Color Foto , Die Zeit Magazin , Basler Magazin and LA City Magazine , among others . In 1993 he was cover artist for W & Vs ART WORK . Turning to film, he produced the 30-second video Oceans for Camelot Filmproduktion . In 1995 he went back to Los Angeles and produced erotic TinTone sequences for > O <magazine and Larry Flynts (LFP) Rage magazine . In January 2005, Fine Art Foto Magazin published an eight-page portfolio by the artist Russ. Since 2008 he has been producing large-format TinTones using the AluDiBond-Silver-Industrial process.
