Michael Cooper (basketball coach)
Michael Jerome Cooper, Sr. (Born April 15, 1956 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American basketball coach and former player. Between 1978 and 1990 he played in the US professional league NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers . Cooper is 1.96 m tall and mainly played the shooting guard position . He was among the top defenders for wingers in the 1980s.
In 1994 he began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the Lakers. In 1999 he became head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA and was named WNBA Coach of the Year in 2000. In 2001 and 2002 he led the Sparks to the WNBA championship. In 2004 he again accepted an assistant coach position in the NBA, this time with the Denver Nuggets . Most recently, Cooper was hired as an interim trainer for the Nuggets.
Cooper received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1986 for social engagement.
