Michael Hesse (art historian)

Michael Hesse (born October 13, 1951 in Dortmund ) is a German art historian and university professor .

Life

Career

Michael Hesse studied art history / art history , classical archeology , history and philosophy in Bochum and Münster from 1971 to 1976 and first passed the state examination in the subjects of art history and history. In his admission work, he devoted himself to the Chigi Chapel at the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome and its remodeling by the sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century. A scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation enabled him to pursue further studies in Bochum and Paris . In 1979 he completed this with a doctorate . In his dissertation , which he wrote under the guidance of Manfred Wundram , he dealt with the examination of Gothic in sacred architecture from the 16th to the 18th centuries in France (see the section on fonts ). The further subject area of ​​the architectural history of the early modern period continued to be his special focus until today (compare the sections research interests and offices as well as the detailed list of publications below ). From 1979 to 1986 he worked as a research assistant and as a university assistant at the Art History Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum , and from 1980 to 1988 as a lecturer for building history and architectural theory at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dortmund . In 1986 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bochum with a research thesis on Königsplatz in Paris . From the same year he worked there as a professor for the field of Middle and Modern Art History until he switched to the professorship for Modern European Art History at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg in 1992 .
