Michael J. Vickers

Michael John Vickers (born February 17, 1943 in Manchester ) is a British classical archaeologist .

Michael Vickers studied at the University College of North Wales in Bangor and gained there in 1964 the degree of BA in the following year he made his degree in Classical Archeology at Corpus Christi College of Cambridge University . From 1966 to 1969 he was a research assistant (Assistant Lecturer) at University College Dublin . During this time he was also a student at the British School at Athens .

After studying at the British School he was 1969/70 Lecturer in Benghazi before moving to Oxford came there from 1971 to 1988, first deputy curator ( English Assistant Keeper ) and 1988-2010 Senior Assistant Keeper in the Department of Antiquities of the Ashmolean Museum was . During these years he was visiting lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin (1979/80) and at Eton College (1987).

From 1996 to 2010 Vickers was Senior Research Fellow for Classical Studies at Jesus College of the University of Oxford .

From 1996 he was reader for archeology, from 2002 professor for archeology at Oxford. Visiting professorships took him to the University of Catania (2002) and the University of Colorado Boulder (2003, 2013). Vickers also gave the 2002/2003 Kress Lectures at the Archaeological Institute of America . In 2010 he retired .

In 1966 he carried out a survey in Diokaisareia (Uzuncaburç) in Cilicia . From 1967 to 1969 he took part in the excavations at the Polyeuktoskirche in Istanbul under Martin Harrison . From 1967 to 1973 he worked on the ancient and early Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki . In 1974 he was involved in the excavation of the Roman Circus in Leptis Magna . From 1998 to 2010 he and Amiran Kakhidze led the British-Georgian excavation in the settlement and necropolis of Pichvnari on the Black Sea coast of Georgia .
