Michael Ryan (born May 16, 1980 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player on the position of the center who has been working as a coach since retired .
Career
In the 1999 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Dallas Stars in the second round in 32nd place. In March 2003, the rights to Ryan and a draft pick in exchange for Stu Barnes were given to the Buffalo Sabers . After spending four years at Northeastern University , Ryan made his professional debut with the Sabers farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League in 2003/04 . In November 2006 he was called up to the NHL squad of the Sabers and on November 22, he stepped on the ice for the first time in the NHL against the Toronto Maple Leafs . On March 2, 2007 Ryan then scored his first two NHL goals against the Montréal Canadiens and was consequently voted the first star of the game.
In July 2007, his contract was renewed for a year in which he earned $ 475,000. A year later, he accepted a contract offer from the Sabers that was valid for both the NHL and the AHL, not and instead signed a contract with HK Dinamo Minsk from the newly founded Continental Hockey League . A little later, however, the Carolina Hurricanes submitted to him a two-way contract for the NHL and AHL, which Ryan also signed, as there was no transfer agreement between the NHL and KHL.
In November 2010 he was signed by the Philadelphia Flyers , who sent him on the farm team to the Adirondack Phantoms . After they did not renew his expiring contract in the summer of 2011, Ryan was hired as a free agent by the Buffalo Sabers in August 2011 . He then played for the Rochester Americans in the AHL, before Ässät Pori was committed from the SM-liiga in May 2012 . With the Ässät he won the Finnish championship title at the end of the 2012/13 season . After this success he was signed by the KHL Medveščak Zagreb from the Continental Hockey League in June 2013 . A year later he returned to the Ässät and signed a two-year contract. Due to injury, he only made a few appearances for Ässät and therefore left the club in November 2015. He then ended his career and in 2016 became an assistant coach for the newly founded Springfield Thunderbirds .
