Michael Stohl (born November 19, 1814 in Vienna ; † March 18, 1881 ibid) was an Austrian portrait painter , watercolorist , copier and lithographer .

Life

His older brother Franz Stohl (1799–1882) gave him his first drawing lessons. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld .

In 1832 he painted a portrait of St. Egidius for the neo-Gothic crypt chapel of Prince Schwarzenberg in Třeboň . Then he continued the work his brother Franz had started on the ancestral hall of the Princely House of Schwarzenberg. He also created lithographs based on the princely portraits. He also helped Joseph Kriehuber with his lithographs.

In 1840 he came to Trieste and was promoted there by Count Johann Nepomuk Waldstein (1809–1876). In 1842 he went to Rome and became friends with artists such as August Riedel , Woldemar Hottenroth , Leopold Pollak , Karl Mayer and Karl Rahl . He was commissioned by Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna Romanowa to portray herself, her husband and her children. Tsar Nicholas I invited him to Saint Petersburg during his stay in Rome .

In 1848 he returned to Vienna. In 1852 he came again to Saint Petersburg, where he became seriously ill. After his recovery, the Grand Duchess Marija Nikolajewna and her sister-in-law, the Empress of Russia Charlotte of Prussia (1798–1860) commissioned him with the execution of watercolor copies of the paintings of the old masters from the galleries of Vienna , Dresden , Paris , Berlin and Madrid , Seville , London and Kassel .

In the period from 1853 to 1872 Stohl visited the cities mentioned and created over 300 watercolor copies of works by old masters, which were exhibited in a hall of the St. Petersburg Hermitage . He was awarded the title of court painter by the tsar . In addition to copying, Stohl created some genre and landscape pictures as well as portraits.
