Minabe ( Japanese み な べ 町 , -chō ) is a municipality in the district of Hidaka in the Japanese prefecture of Wakayama .
history
On October 1, 2004, the community Minabe ( 南部 町 , -chō ) and the village of Minabegawa ( 南部 川村 , -mura ) merged to form the new community Minabe ( み な べ 町 , -chō ).
Nankō-ume
The city is famous for the so-called Nankō-Ume ( 南 高 梅 ), a special kind of Umeboshi . The Nankō-Ume was invented by a teacher of the Minabe High School ( Minabe Kōkō ). The name Nankō-Ume is composed of the first kanji of Minabe ( 南 , nan ) and high school ( 高 , kō ), as well as the word for plum ( 梅 , ume ).
Attractions
There are two Shinto shrines , whose shrine festivals both take place in late August / early September.
