The Mission House was in the middle of the 18th century in Stockbridge in the state of Massachusetts of the United States by the missionary John Sergeant built. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places and is now operated as a museum by The Trustees of Reservations organization .

history

The actual construction date of the house cannot be clearly established. John Sergeant, first missionary to live there Mahican - Indians , already received the land as part of the foundation of the city Stockbridge in 1739, but the building was first mentioned 1,742th The house was initially built on Prospect Hill , but was moved to its current location in the 1920s by Mabel Choate - then owner of what is now the Naumkeag Conservation Area . The Stockbridge Mission House Association donated it to the Trustees for further management in 1948.

From 1928 to 1933, the renowned landscape architect Fletcher Steele designed and built the gardens of the house in the style of Colonial Revival architecture . In a separate kitchen garden there are still more than 100 herbs as well as perennials and annuals that were either of culinary or medicinal importance for the early colonists. A replica of a Cobbler sales stand serves as the entrance to the property today .

In the house itself, an extensive collection of furnishings and furniture from the 18th century can be viewed. The back yard leads to a small area in which the history of the Mahican Indians is presented on the one hand using artefacts that Mabel Choate collected in the 1930s, but on the other hand using stories from the descendants living today.
