The vehicle fleet includes everyday vehicles in ten categories, ranging from economical small cars to convertibles to small vans.

The strong red color makes the company's central recognition value in Switzerland. Sustainability is a key factor in Mobility's vehicle management: According to the company's own information, the entire fleet emits an average of 97 g CO 2 / km. This means that Mobility has exceeded the federal guidelines that will apply from 2015 by 33 percent. When it comes to electric cars , Mobility relies on the Renault ZOE . As of November 2019, three percent of the total fleet were electric cars. In December 2019, the electric car fleet was expanded to include a Tesla Model S 90D . This Tesla was stationed at Basel SBB train station and can be rented by drivers aged 25 and over, with the exception of new drivers. In addition, 200 red e-scooters were offered in the city of Zurich from April 19, 2018 to November 4, 2019 .

functionality

The vehicles will be on the Internet, by telephone or via smartphone - Application reserved. This is possible around the clock and at short notice. The reservation is transferred to the vehicle via SMS within a few minutes. The vehicle can then be opened and used with the Mobility Card or SwissPass . Some vehicle types are equipped for completely keyless operation. After the return, the on-board computer transmits the driving data for the trip accounting to the central system also via SMS . Fees are charged for the number of kilometers driven and for the duration of use. All costs for gasoline, auto insurance, taxes, maintenance and depreciation are included.

Locations

Mobility preferably makes vehicles available at train stations and in metropolitan areas . This is due to the cooperation with various public transport companies in the area of connecting mobility. Over 40 percent of Mobility cars are located at SBB train stations alone . The aim is to combine public transport and cars.

deals

Mobility addresses various target groups with its subscriptions and offers. For example, Mobility launched the “learner driver subscription” (2013) for learner drivers and new drivers. The same with the “Student Subscription” (2014) for students. Private customers have the option of becoming a member of the cooperative, purchasing annual / test subscriptions, or registering for the Click & Drive offer free of charge.

In the area of business mobility, Mobility offers two different solutions. As part of the “Business Carsharing” offer, companies use mobility cars - from selective use to exclusive vehicles at company headquarters. “Pool car sharing”, on the other hand, equips existing company fleets with car sharing technology and thus enables in-house car sharing . Additional services such as claims management and maintenance are also integrated into the offer. Various companies have outsourced some or all of their vehicle fleets to Mobility. These include, for example, Migros (since 1998) and ABB .

One-way trips have been possible since 2016 with the Mobility-One-Way pilot project. These trips can be made between the seven largest train stations for a flat fee. This offer can be used by private and business customers.

In addition, Mobility launched a pilot project for self-driving buses in the city of Zug in spring 2017 with SBB and other partners.

Cooperations

The company cooperates with the Swiss Federal Railways SBB, among others, which provide stands at train stations.

There are also collaborations with the car rental companies Europcar (2016) and Hertz (1996), which offer Mobility members discounted rental terms. In addition, annual and trial subscribers have the option of obtaining a free hotel card.

Mobility also cooperates with Flinkster , the car sharing offer of Deutsche Bahn , users of both providers can reserve and use cars from the other provider with their customer card.

history

Mobility was created in 1997 through the merger of the two Swiss car sharing cooperatives AutoTeilet-Genossenschaft (ATG) and ShareCom . These predecessor companies were both founded in 1987, ATG in Stans and ShareCom in Zurich . The two companies already cooperated in 1991 and made it possible for their members to use the vehicles mutually. In the same year, they helped found the European Car Sharing (ECS) association. In 1996 ATG took over the Geneva cooperative CopAuto (founded in 1993). ShareCom developed the first on-board computer in the same year.

The new company Mobility CarSharing, which emerged from the merger of ATG and ShareCom in 1997 and has its legal headquarters in Zurich, comprised 17,400 customers and 760 vehicles. As a result, the technical development of the reservation system was pushed forward: the vehicles were equipped with on-board computers and the members received a chip card (mobility card). At the same time, reservation via the Internet was introduced. The expensive technical equipment meant a great financial burden, so that a renovation program was necessary in 2000.

Since then, Mobility has continuously increased the number of members and customers as well as the vehicles and locations used. Various collaborations were launched or expanded. In 2013, Mobility was awarded the GfM Prize by the Swiss Society for Marketing.

Subsidiaries

Mobility sells its MobiSys 2.0 booking system and its expertise in fleet management and marketing through its subsidiary Mobility Systems + Services (founded in 2001 as Mobility Support AG).

In 2014 Mobility launched the first station-independent car sharing offer in Switzerland called “ Catch a Car ” in Basel. As a member, you can locate the catch cars on your smartphone or website and drive from A to B without prior reservation. Catch a Car was in a two-year pilot phase until the beginning of 2016. Due to the positive results of the pilot project, the station-independent car sharing offer will continue to be offered in Basel and expanded to Geneva in 2016. The effects of Catch a Car on the mobility behavior of the individual members were scientifically monitored by ETH Zurich. In 2019 Mobility took over Catch a Car completely and integrated Catch a Car into the Mobility system. Since then, the offer for station-independent car sharing has been offered in Basel and Geneva under the name “Mobility Go”.

One-way trips have been possible since 2016 with the Mobility-One-Way pilot project. These trips can be made between the seven largest train stations for a flat fee. This offer can be used by private and business customers.

criticism

The Audi off-roaders called environmental organizations on the scene. The Läbigi Stadt association protested in Bern. "Such a car clearly contradicts the basic ecological idea of car sharing," explains Nadine Masshardt . In the meantime, Mobility has tried to smooth things over as much as possible: The SUV that was stationed at Bern train station is now parked in Thun. Nonetheless, more SUVs and sedans were added to the range in 2019: Jaguar F-Pace , Land Rover Discovery Sport , Range Rover Velar , Jaguar XF and the Jaguar XE ; These are not shown in red, as is usually the case with Mobility.
