SwissPass

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SwissPass is a customer card from the Association of Public Transport (VöV) that has been issued since August 1, 2015. Since then, it has been required to purchase general and half-fare travelcards and serves as a ticket and customer loyalty .

Structure and functionality

The SwissPass has a photo, name, date of birth, gender and the relevant codes printed on it. On the other hand, there is no information on the purchased services such as transport subscriptions and therefore no expiration dates. This information is recorded on the two integrated RFID chips, one of which is primarily used to check the validity of public transport services, the other primarily for that of ski passes. According to the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) , no direct customer data is stored on the RFID chips, but only an identification number that can be read out by public transport inspectors using appropriately equipped smartphones. During a passenger check, the subscribed services associated with this identification number and the personal data are then determined and compared with the information printed on the card.

The subscription is automatically extended by one year if it is not canceled in due time. A function for electronic reminder (SMS or e-mail) of the last day of validity and the cancellation date is only available to customers who have purchased a general subscription on an annual invoice or a Half-Fare travelcard. To do this, it is necessary to set up the SwissPass login. a. the expiration dates of the subscriptions loaded on it can also be viewed.

The six tariff networks A wave , Z-Pass, Frimobil , Libero , Passepartout and the fare network Schwyz will offer from 10 December 2017 of their subscriptions on the Swiss Pass. At the same time, other product ranges and offers are to be integrated on the SwissPass. This includes the Velo-Pass and the monthly half-fare card. At the beginning of 2018 , platform 7 , the monthly class change to the GA travelcard and the excursion subscription will follow . A mobile app will also be launched in 2018 . From April 2018, the offers of the Zug tariff association will be integrated.

SwissPass login

The SwissPass login is free of charge and is also available without the red SwissPass card. The swisspass.ch access data also provides access to various online public transport services. Since November 2017, the SwissPass login has been mandatory for access to purchase tickets via SBB Mobile and at SBB.ch. Later, the web shops of followed post bus and Libero fare association . Since August 2019, you can also register with SwissID .

Other properties

The SwissPass can also be used for other services such as Mobility Carsharing , PubliBike (a Switzerland-wide bike rental system ), SwitzerlandMobility and certain ski areas.

In contrast to the purchased services linked to it, a SwissPass card has no expiry date, but is replaced after five years.

The SwissPass is produced, personalized and sent directly to the cardholder by Gemalto AG , based in Aarau (formerly Trüb AG ). In the future, this order will be taken over by TCS Cards & Services GmbH from Bamberg , Germany.

A detailed description of the control process can be found on the SBB website for media professionals.

The SBB have registered part of the front of the SwissPass as a protected trademark for ten different classes of goods and services.

For young people and families there is the SwissPass Smile program with various leisure activities.

criticism

Third party usage costs

Businesses that introduce the SwissPass as a means of payment must pay a fee to SBB. Some mountain railways are boycotting the SwissPass for this reason.

Criticism on a political level

Before its introduction in summer 2015, the new Swiss Pass came under criticism with regard to data protection . For example, it was said that the collection of data would make it possible one motion profile to create railway customers.

On August 10, 2015, the petition 15.2018 “Against the Swisspass compulsion” was submitted.

On September 9th, 2015, the National Councilor Jean Christophe Schwaab submitted the interpellation 15.3822 “Curing the teething troubles of the new public transport subscription 'SwissPass' quickly”. The Federal Council issued an opinion on this on November 4, 2015.

Clarification of the facts by the FDPIC

On February 17, 2016, a media release made it public that the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) had clarified the facts of the Swisspass and the associated data processing at the end of 2015. The following essential points of the legal assessment can be found in the final report and the recommendation of the FDPIC:

  • More transparency should be created for customers and third parties as to who is the owner of the data collections in connection with the SwissPass.
  • It is not necessary to keep the control data in the control database for 90 days and is therefore disproportionate. It cannot be ruled out that movement profiles will arise in the control database.
  • Regarding petition 15.2018, the Federal Office of Transport (FOT), in correspondence with the FDPIC, took the view that the control database is neither proportionate nor based on a sufficient legal basis.
  • Recommendation No. 1: The VöV and the SBB should ensure that the control data is deleted immediately and that the control database is no longer operated.
  • Suggestion no. 2: The general terms and conditions (GTC) are imprecisely formulated in the area of personal data processing for marketing purposes. It should be made clear that not only contact, but also personal data processing for marketing purposes in general can be prohibited by customers.
  • Proposal no. 3: The VöV and SBB should adapt their rules and regulations on data use and any other documents in accordance with the other recommendations.

On February 29, 2016, the Swiss Federal Railways and the Association of Public Transport responded to the recommendations of the FDPIC in largely identical media releases and made the following key points:

  • The VöV and the SBB will follow the suggestions and recommendations in the final report of the FDPIC.
  • The operation of the control database will cease at the end of March 2016.
  • A clear legal basis for such data processing for control and accounting purposes is sought.
