The Moggaster Cave is a natural karst cave near Moggast , a district of Ebermannstadt in the Upper Franconian district of Forchheim in Bavaria .

location

The cave is located about 600 meters north of Moggast on the southern slope of the 544 meter high Hohlberg.

description

The Moggaster Cave is a natural karst cave with a total length of over 2000 meters and a depth of around 70 meters. It is one of the longest and most important caves in the Franconian Alb . The cave is designated as a natural monument (ND-03927), as a ground monument D-4-6233-0051 and in the cave cadastre Franconian Alb (HFA) with the cadastral number D 110.

Immediately after the entrance, the cave drops off steeply. Steep drops and collapse zones make driving difficult . The combined split and storey cave has water basins and stalactite galleries . The rock debris covered by the sinter shows that stalactite formation probably began after the worm glaciers . The lower and newly discovered parts show an untouched world of caves with many formations.

The cave is also of interest to zoologists and, in addition to many micro-animals, also houses the glacier-flea-hard springtail .

history

The cave had been known for a long time, as is proven by finds from the Urnfield , Hallstatt and Latène times . In 1773 the doctor and cave researcher Johann Christian Rosenmüller explored the cave with some companions. Among them was the then "Mockas school teacher" (Moggast). In doing so, they discovered numerous cave bear bones , skull remnants and teeth between cave blocks, side niches and in the cave clay . In 1796 Rosenmüller documented these finds in the essay Description of the Cave near Mockas . Adalbert Neischl described the cave in 1902 as "the wildest and most dangerous, but also one of the most interesting caves around Muggendorf".

Access

A visit is only possible with equipment and appropriate experience. The cave is closed all year round and only accessible for scientific research purposes. However, the ban is repeatedly disregarded.
