action

Actor Gauthier Valence, who was in the soap opera Docteur Morange celebrating a brain specialist great success in the mostly female audience wants, at the Theater Molière's Misanthrope stage. To this end, he travels via La Rochelle to the Île de Ré , where he visits his former colleague Serge Tanneur. Both once turned together, but haven't seen each other for six years. After a depression and disappointment at the disinterest of his colleagues, Serge had completely withdrawn from the film business. Now he leads a solitary life in an inherited, rundown house. Serge is amazed to see Gauthier. When he learns that he wants to cast him in the piece, he flatly refuses because he never wants to play again. Gauthier gives him time to get used to the idea and claims he is in the area because he is looking for a house for himself and his girlfriend Christine. During the tour of the house, Serge asks about the production Gauthier is planning. The Alceste from the Misanthrope had always been Serge's dream role and he responds negatively, as Gauthier told him to have provided the supporting role of Philinte for him. In the end, both agree to take turns playing the two main roles in the event of a performance.

Serge persuades Gauthier to stay on the Île de Ré until the next day. They begin rehearsals in Serge's house, and a coin toss results in Serge being the first to take on the role of Alceste. Serge struggles with his performance, feeling rusty after all these years away from the stage. Over time, however, his feeling for text and speaking improves. Furthermore, by tossing a coin, they determine who can play the role of Alceste in the rehearsal. In the end, Serge Gauthier was able to convince them to stay in town for another four days until the weekend. After this time he wants to decide whether he will play the piece or not.

Both men find time to talk about more private things and also use the days on the island to ride bikes together. Gauthier and Serge get to know the Italian Francesca during another tour of the house organized by the busy broker Meynard. She is initially negative towards both men because she does not like actors. The next day, she apologizes to Serge for her negative attitude the day before: she is currently in a dirty divorce and had a violent argument with her husband on the phone. The encounter with Francesca literally distracted Serge from his decision to have a vasectomy performed at the last second, already lying on the operating table . Gauthier also gets to know Francesca better.

A short time later, during a rehearsal, Gauthier and Serge argue violently because Gauthier, who is now allowed to play Alceste, keeps replacing a certain word with another. Together with Francesca, both later watch Gauthier's series about Doctor Morange. Even if the soap opera is artistically flat, Serge Gauthier praises his play. Shortly afterwards Meynard calls, and Serge starts a long phone call, during which he makes it clear that Meynard did not bother him and that he only saw Gauthier's series. Gauthier leaves suddenly, and Francesca, too, is disappointed with Serge's behavior, putting herself above Gauthier and duping him. Serge refuses to apologize to Gauthier. When Serge praised Gauthier at rehearsals the next day, he had enough. Because Serge treats him like a schoolmaster and only wants to exercise power over Gauthier without being interested in the play or the staging itself, Gauthier leaves. When the two meet again a little later, Serge finally agrees to play the piece with Gauthier. Both meet Francesca, spend the time together on the beach and end up at their house a little later. Francesca and Serge like each other and dance together, but Serge accompanies Gauthier when he wants to leave. The next day, Francesca left the place. Gauthier admits to having returned to her the night before and to having found her crying. She pounced on him, he consoled her and then both of them slept together. Outwardly, Serge appears uninvolved.

Gauthier's agent Tamara, Christine and other members of the theater come to the Île de Ré to sign the contract. Serge appears on his bike in an Alceste costume that he had ordered in the meantime. When he and Gauthier are asked to give a small sample of his skills and the toss of the coin assigns him the role of Philinte, he insists on playing Alceste - not only at the rehearsal but also later during the performance. It comes to a scandal: Serge reveals Gauthier's affair, and both attack each other. In the end, Gauthier throws him out and Serge leaves with a quote from Misanthrope on his lips. At the theater premiere a few weeks later, Gauthier stumbles as Alceste over precisely this passage, which he had always misrepresented during rehearsals with Serge. This mistake upset him so much that the performance stalls. Serge meanwhile sits alone on the beach on the Île de Ré and recites exactly this line of text to himself without errors.
