Monkton is a village in the Scottish council area of South Ayrshire . It is about ten kilometers north of Ayr and four kilometers southeast of Troon near the banks of the Firth of Clyde .

history

A church building existed at this location by the 12th century at the latest. This subordinated Walter FitzAlan , High Steward of Scotland , between 1165 and 1172 of the Abbey of Paisley . St Cuthbert's Church , preserved today as a ruin, is a successor building from the early 13th century. In 1837 the building was abandoned. Monkton developed with weaving in the 18th century. In the following century, with the arrival of the railroad, Monkton turned into an important cargo handling point.

While the population fell from 403 in 1861 to 354 within 20 years, the 1961 census survey counted 1045 inhabitants in Monkton. Thereafter, the number of inhabitants decreased to 661 in 2001. In the 2011 census survey, 918 people lived in Monkton.

In the 1970s, a bypass road was built around Monkton. The village is well connected to the trunk road network by the junction of the A78 ( Greenock - Monkton) and the A77 ( Glasgow - Stranraer ) to the northeast . The short A79 also runs along the western flank . In the 19th century, the Glasgow and South Western Railway established a train station in Monkton. The station was on the area of ​​what is now Glasgow Prestwick Airport , which extends immediately south of Monkton.

In the Monkton area there are a total of four monuments of the highest Scottish monument category A. In addition to the ruins of St Cuthbert's Church, this also includes the Arts and Crafts Villa 3 Gray Gables , built in 1909 . The Monkton windmill is on the northeastern edge of the village . The tower windmill dates from the 17th century and is also classified as a Scheduled Monument . Northeast of Monkton, the Macrae's Monument was built in 1748 . It commemorates the former President of Fort St. George , James Macrae , who is from the area.
