Monosulfur mononitride is an inorganic chemical compound of sulfur from the group of covalent nitrides . The compound is one next to the disulfur dinitride , the Tetraschwefeldinitrid , the Pentaschwefelhexanitrid , the tetrasulfur tetranitride , the Monoschwefeldinitrid , the Oligoschwefeldinitriden and the polymeric polythiazyl (SN) x to the group of sulfur-nitrogen compounds or Schwefelnitride . The connection is isovalent-electronic with the nitrogen monoxide and thus also a radical.

It arises from electrical discharges in a gas mixture of sulfur and nitrogen or from the thermal decomposition of gaseous tetrasulfur tetranitride. In space it was observed in a giant molecular cloud and in comet envelopes .

The compound is unstable and quickly breaks down into sulfur, nitrogen and higher sulfur nitrides. The enthalpy of formation is endothermic at 281 kJ mol −1 . The bond length determined by means of IR spectroscopy is 149.7 μm. The dissociation energy for the SN bond is 463 kJ mol −1 .

Analogous to nitrogen monoxide, the release of an electron forms the thionitrosyl cation NS + , which occurs in salts such as the thionitrosyl hexafluorophosphate NSPF 6 or in metal complexes. There are no known compounds with the nitroxyl ion NO - analogue thionitroxyl ion NS - resulting from the uptake of an electron .
