history

Bank of the Russian River in Monte Rio, 1909

Beginning in the 1870s, Monte Rio was a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad that connected Cazadero to the ferry from Sausalito . Sequoia wood from the local sawmills was transported over this route for the construction of San Francisco. After the sawmills were abandoned, the area became known as a vacation paradise. The trains took San Francisco residents to summer cottages; There was also a seven-story hotel downtown. Parts of the Oscar-winning film Holiday Inn , shot in 1942, are set at the Village Inn Resort in Monte Rio. The railway line has now been closed and the area is mainly inhabited by sedentary people all year round.

Despite extensive logging in the second half of the 19th century, an area of 65 hectares of ancient sequoia trees was protected by the Sonoma Lumber Company and sold to the Bohemian Club in San Francisco in 1899 . The club subsequently acquired dozen more plots and now owns approximately 1,100 hectares (2,712 ac) that are used for its summer meetings.
