Montpelier is a village in Williams County , Ohio , United States . At the 2000 census, 4,320 people lived here.

geography

The place is about 16 kilometers north of the county capital Bryan in a bend in the St. Joseph River . The Ohio Turnpike Highway runs immediately north.

history

Montpelier was founded in 1845 by John K. Bryner and Jesse Tucker. The founders named the place after Montpelier , the capital of the state of Vermont . The early years were marked by rivalry between the new settlement and neighboring Bryan. After Defiance County was founded, Montpelier was closer to the geographical center of Williams County, and therefore sought in 1850, 1853 and 1857 to become the seat of county administration . The dispute was finally decided in favor of Bryan in 1888. Montpelier was granted the status of a village in 1874.

There was an upswing when Montpelier was connected to the rail network. Already around 1870 there were plans to connect the place to the network of the Chicago & Canada Southern Railroad, which however were not realized. In 1880 the company Detroit, Butler & St. Louis Railroad (later Wabash Railroad, today Norfolk Southern Railway ) opened a connection to Montpelier, in 1881 they built the first depot . Ten years later the population had tripled. In 1901 the company opened a line from Montpelier to Toledo , and from 1907 it relocated its offices from Ashley , Indiana , to the small town. The railway became the largest employer and a determining economic factor: in 1936 the company in Montpellier employed 400 people. Montpelier remained a railway town until the 1970s, when the decline of the railway was also reflected here. Passenger traffic ceased in 1971 and the historic depot was demolished in the early 1980s. The line from Maumee to Montpelier was discontinued in 1991.

culture and education

There are two elementary schools and one high school in the village. The Williams County Community Theater and the County Museum are also located here.
