Moriz Miller , from 1840 by Miller , (born March 10, 1792 in Stuttgart , † October 5, 1866 there ) was a Württemberg general of the infantry and minister of war .

Life

Moriz Miller became a lieutenant in the Württemberg army at the age of 15 and participated in the war of 1809 in the Württemberg general staff. After the Battle of Abensberg he was awarded the Order of Military Merit. During the campaign to Russia it was often used in the French headquarters. In Smolensk he suffered a wound and received the Cross of the Legion of Honor . He took part in the campaigns of the Wars of Liberation of 1813 and 1814 as a company commander, and in that of 1815 as an adjutant of an infantry division. During the peace years he rose to the rank of major general and was at the head of the Württemberg general staff from 1838 to 1847. As Chief of the General Staff, he created the Field Engineer Corps and promoted agreements in the 8th Federal Army Corps on signals and regulations. In 1848 he was the Frankfurt National Assembly appointed Reich General, but the later imperial rulers refused to obey and settled by King Wilhelm I . of Württemberg at the head of the troops that dissolved the rump parliament in Stuttgart. In the same year he moved to Schleswig-Holstein as commander of the division formed from Württemberg, Baden and Hessian troops. In 1849 he commanded the Württemberg expeditionary corps to put down the revolution in Baden . He kept his soldiers under strict discipline. In 1850 he took over the management of the War Ministry in the Linden Ministry . He advocated numerous reforms in regulations and administration and pushed through the Chamber of Deputies to improve the economic situation of officers and soldiers. On December 19, 1864 King appointed him Karl the owner of the 4th Infantry Regiment that then led his name. On the occasion of his departure, Miller was appointed general of the infantry the following year.

Publications

Miller had made a name for himself as early as 1822 by depicting the campaign of 1812. In 1829 and 1831 he published the lectures he held as a teacher at the officer training institute on applied tactics, in 1832 on field entrenchment in connection with pioneer and pontoon service, as well as on standing fortifications and the teaching of attack and defense of fixed places.

Honors

Miller received the following honors during his lifetime:

  • 1840 Grand Cross of the Order of Frederick , with which the personal nobility was connected
  • 1849 Grand Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown
  • 1857 Grand Cross of the Württemberg Military Order of Merit
