history

The river used to be the upper reaches of the Sambre , but was diverted towards the Oise by the dukes of Guise in the 16th century to improve the water supply to the mills of Étreux . Therefore it is still called Ancienne Sambre (roughly: "Former Sambre") today. Through the valley used for the diversion, the Canal de la Sambre à l'Oise (German: Sambre-Oise Canal) was built in 1834–1839 .
