Mundialito / Argentina

Argentina at the Mundialito 1980/81 in Uruguay .

National coach Menotti relied mainly on the squad that had won the World Cup two and a half years earlier. The veteran defender Daniel Killer , who was only a substitute in 1978, had already resigned in 1978. He had not used the young super talent Diego Maradona in 1978 so as not to burn it out. After Maradona's outstanding performance in 1979 at the Junior World Cup, he was appointed to the national team. Menotti wanted to defend the 1982 World Cup with him as a playmaker.
