The municipality Coipasa is a district in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The municipality of Coipasa is one of three municipalities in the province of Sabaya . It is bordered in the northwest by the Municipio Sabaya , in the west by the Republic of Chile , in the south by the Department of Potosí , in the east by the Province of Ladislao Cabrera , and in the northeast by the Municipio Chipaya .
The municipality consists of the Coipasa Coipasa Island and the northwest part of the salt lake Salar de Coipasa . The district comprises a total of six localities, the central place is the village of Coipasa with 742 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the northeastern part of the island.
geography
The climate in the region is semi-arid , the annual precipitation is only 200 mm (see climate diagram Sabaya). From April to November there is a dry season with monthly values of less than 10 mm of precipitation, the wet season in summer is short and the rain is not very productive. The annual average temperature is almost 7 ° C without significant fluctuations in the course of the year, but with strong daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent changes in frost .
The vegetation in the region corresponds to the semi-arid puna . It is treeless and mainly consists of thorn bushes , grasses , succulents and cushion plants . It is used economically as a llama , alpaca and sheep pasture .

- 2012 : 903 inhabitants (update)
The population density of the municipality in the last census of 2012 was 0.6 inhabitants / km², the proportion of the urban population was 0 percent, the life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 66.1 years.
The literacy rate among those over 19 years of age is 96 percent, 98 percent for men and 94 percent for women ( 2001 ).

The municipality is not in cantons ( cantones ) divided, there is more than two-thirds of the salt lake " Salar de Coipasa ". The only notable town in the municipality of Coipasa is the main town of Coipasa with 742 inhabitants.
