The municipality Coipasa is a district in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Coipasa is one of three municipalities in the province of Sabaya . It is bordered in the northwest by the Municipio Sabaya , in the west by the Republic of Chile , in the south by the Department of Potosí , in the east by the Province of Ladislao Cabrera , and in the northeast by the Municipio Chipaya .

The municipality consists of the Coipasa Coipasa Island and the northwest part of the salt lake Salar de Coipasa . The district comprises a total of six localities, the central place is the village of Coipasa with 742 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the northeastern part of the island.

The climate in the region is semi-arid , the annual precipitation is only 200 mm (see climate diagram Sabaya). From April to November there is a dry season with monthly values ​​of less than 10 mm of precipitation, the wet season in summer is short and the rain is not very productive. The literacy rate among those over 19 years of age is 96 percent, 98 percent for men and 94 percent for women ( 2001 ).
