The Municipio Chipaya is a district in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The municipality of Chipaya is one of three municipalities in the province of Sabaya . It borders in the north with the province of Litoral , in the west with the municipality Sabaya , in the south with the municipality Coipasa , and in the east with the province Ladislao Cabrera .
The municipality of Chipaya is located at the mouth of the Río Lauca , which flows into the northeastern part of the Salar de Coipasa salt lake . The central place of the municipality is the village of Chipaya with 827 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the western part of the district.
geography
The climate in the region is semi-arid , the annual precipitation is only 200 mm (see climate diagram Sabaya). From April to November there is a dry season with monthly values of less than 10 mm of precipitation, the wet season in summer is short and the rain is not very productive. The annual average temperature is almost 7 ° C without significant fluctuations in the course of the year, but with strong daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent changes in frost .
The vegetation in the region corresponds to the semi-arid puna . It is treeless and mainly consists of thorn bushes , grasses , succulents and cushion plants . It is used economically as a llama , alpaca and sheep pasture .

- 2012 : 2,003 inhabitants (census)
The population density of the municipality at the last census in 2012 was 2.6 inhabitants / km², the proportion of the urban population was 0 percent, the life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 58.8 years.
The literacy rate among those over 19 is 90 percent, 98 percent for men and 81 percent for women ( 2001 ).
The predominant colloquial language is Chipaya , most of the residents also speak Spanish , and many also speak Aymara as a second or third language .
