Litoral (also: Litoral de Atacama ) is a province in the southwestern part of the Oruro department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia . On September 6, 1960, President Víctor Paz Estenssoro renamed the province previously called Sabaya in memory of the lost Litoral Department , whose territory borders on today's Bolivia just a few kilometers west of it.

The Litoral Province is one of sixteen provinces in the Oruro Department. It lies between 18 ° 32 'and 19 ° 04' south latitude and between 67 ° 29 'and 68 ° 06' west longitude .

It borders in the north on the province of Sajama , in the west and south on the province of Sabaya , in the south-east on the province Sud Carangas and in the north-east on the province Carangas .

The province extends over a length of 65 kilometers in north-south direction and 55 kilometers in east-west direction.

population

The population of the province of Litoral has increased fivefold in the past two decades:

  • 2012 : 10,409 inhabitants (census)

34.5 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. 89.8 percent of the population speak Spanish , 76.0 percent Aymara, and 13.7 percent Quechua . ( 2001 )

94.5 percent of the population have no access to electricity , 90.5 percent live without sanitary facilities ( 1992 ).

78.0 percent of the workforce work in agriculture , 3.1 percent in industry , 18.9 percent in the service sector ( 2001 ).

77.6 percent of the population are Catholic , 16.3 percent are Protestant ( 1992 ).
