The municipality Esmeralda is a district in the Oruro department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The municipality Esmeralda is the southernmost of the five municipalities in the Litoral Province . It borders the Municipio Huachacalla in the north, the Municipio Yunguyo del Litoral in the west, the Province Sabaya in the south, the Province Sud Carangas in the southeast , and the Municipio Escara in the northeast . The Río Sabaya flows through the district from north to south , before reaching the Salar de Coipasa salt lake a few kilometers further south .
The central place of the municipality is the village Esmeralda with 231 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the northwest corner of the district.

The municipality Esmeralda is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east.
The climate is semi-arid and has a short rainy season in summer, the annual precipitation is low 200 mm (see climate diagram Sabaya). The annual average temperature is almost 7 ° C without significant fluctuations in the course of the year, but with strong daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent changes in frost .
The vegetation in the Esmeralda area corresponds to the semi-arid puna . It is treeless and mainly consists of thorn bushes , grasses , succulents and cushion plants . It is used economically as a llama , alpaca and sheep pasture .
